E-Juice Expiration Date

It is said that e-juice is good for up to years if stored properly.  That seems to be the consensus opinion anyway.

There are several factors you have to consider when trying to determine how long your e-juice will last.  The first two are light and temperature.  It is best to store your juice in a cool dark place.  Both the nicotine and the flavorings in an e-liquid are affected by heat and any e-juice exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period of time will lose its taste and strength.

Both water based flavorings and alcohol based flavorings are affected by heat and sunlight.  Both will evaporate if you leave the cap off.  The nicotine used in e-juice has an organic component.  Anything organic will eventually decay.  Heat and sunlight will speed up this process.

E-juice that has been opened and exposed to air will oxidate faster than e-juice that is stored sealed and closed.  Once the liquid has been exposed to air, it begins to oxidize and decay.

Although it said that e-juice is good for two years, it really depends upon how it is stored.  Under ideal conditions, e-juice can be stored for up to one year unopened and six months if opened.  The best approach is to use your liquid while it is fresh.  Only order large bottles of flavors you know you like and will want to vape on an almost daily basis.  Anything else, order sample bottles.  It is better to have less smoke juice on and, and more on order, than too much laying around going bad.

Notes:

  • Nicotine decomposes when exposed to sunlight and oxygen.
  • Oxidized juice turns a dark color.
  • The flavorings and additives go bad.
  • PG shelf life is 1-2 years.  VG is 1.5 years.
  • Flavoring goes bad fastest.

  1. There is also a great difference in shelf life if the juice comes in a plastic bottle, (short life) or a brown glass bottle (long life) and plastic will alter the flavor faster.
